Ladies Div 2 got their season off to an encouraging start with a nil-all draw against Waves. In a game where the defence rarely looked bothered UPE missed several chances in the first half and failed to capitalise on their early dominance.
First gamer Taylor Stumer from last year’s U13s Pink side gelled well with Jade, Teag and Bella upfront generating several shots on goal in the first half that could easily have found the back of the net.
The defense combination of Jas, Taylor H, Emily and Bec never looked challenged by the Waves strikers and keeper Ruby worked hard, coming out of the box as a spare defender on a number of occasions as a pressure release.
After the break Waves came out strong and looked much more polished but the ladies held strong, with much of the game played in the UPE attacking half.
New recruit Jasmin displayed her foot-speed with some hard running while Emily and Chloe both had solid games. Sandy and Carly came off the bench to inject some of their experience into the younger midfield.
After a stint in defense, last year’s Golden Boot winner Kath was sent forward. The combination of the silky skills of Bella in the centre with the foot-speed of Taylor S and Kath up front is an exciting prospect for the season to come.
Unfortunately, Kath was met hard in a late tackle and had to be taken off the ground by the medics, taking no further part in the game. She was taken to hospital in an ambulance and luckily there was no serious injury.
Coach Mark Haster said "I thought we were outstanding in defense led by Em and Ruby, we created enough clear chances to win 12/0"
The team has a bye next week but will be back in action on April 5th.
